This is a proper Lamu house: coral-rag walls a metre thick, plaster niches, carved zidaka, and a courtyard that pulls cool air up through four floors. It was restored over two years with local fundis using traditional lime plaster rather than cement, which is why it stays so cool.
Three bedrooms plus a rooftop daybed room under a makuti canopy — the place everyone ends up sleeping in. A cook, a houseman and a boat captain come with the house, and the captain is the one who makes the holiday: dhow picnics to Manda Toto, sunset sails, or a run up to Kiwayu.
Shela beach is a four-minute walk. Lamu Town is twenty minutes by boat. There are no cars on the island, so the house is reached on foot through the village lanes — bags are carried, as they have been for six hundred years.
